An art worth saving is an art worth discussing

Human Music

Handmade the HardWay

The Stradisphere Newsletter is the most encompassing discussion of classical music in the world today — and the centre this art has been missing.

Classical music is a six-billion-dollar industry with devoted listeners and generations of young people giving their lives to it alone. Today it sits in the shadow of sports, film, and commercial music, eclipsed by the steady erosion of the discussions and the infrastructure that once carried it to the public, an erosion that has run for forty years and grown sharpest in the last ten. The work is still being made. The means of following it closely is what disappeared. That is the gap this newsletter exists to close.

As the market for serious criticism dried up, the experts who sustained it dwindled with it. What remains too often treats classical music as a commercial interest — serious inquiry reduced to journalistic advertising. Our reporting returns the focus to the music itself: the craft on the page, the theories that occupy the mind of the twenty-first-century composer, the interpretive battles waged between conductors, the scholarship once sealed inside the academy and now carried into the open, where its rigour meets the history and lived human experience that give it meaning. But our focus also intersects with the variable forces that test, question, and refine musical discourse and shape new art — the tensions between the great arts organizations and the artists they commission, the politics and patronage that decide the fate of artists and programs, and the evolution of new musical ideas still too untested to release to a commercial public. And it reaches further still, into the wider life of ideas: literature, the visual and culinary arts, history, and thought.

We guide you through all of it — deep enough for the scholar to sink into, clear enough for the newcomer to see straight to the bottom, gathering the debates and the politics, the culture and the sciences, and the currents shaping the art now. It brings the whole life of music, from the ancient Greeks to the modern recording studio, into your hands every morning.
